More Plant Chica

In June 2023, The Plant Chica launched a fundraising campaign in hopes of securing a new home in West Adams after receiving notice from their landlord about being unable to renew the lease due to upcoming development projects.

Over the course of two weeks, Red Eye worked and partnered with The Plant Chica and other community leaders and partners to throw a fundraising event that featured multiple opportunities for guests to support the fundraising efforts of the beloved space in South LA.

Red Eye was able to help raise over $5000 for the greenhouse throughout the event on ticket sales, a silent auction, and vendor donations.

The Challenge

The owners of The Plant Chica, Sandra Meija and her husband Bantalem Adis, faced a challenging situation. Their dream plant shop was at risk due to gentrification in South LA, especially along Jefferson Blvd. The landlord insisted that they purchase the space or relocate to make way for office and retail development.

To many, The Plant Chica was more than just a business - it was a community hub for people to gather, connect with nature, and form meaningful relationships with each other at yoga events, night markets, and more. They’ve hosted countless events, donated plants to local schools and community centers, and provided a space for customers to unwind after a long day.

Immediately, Red Eye sprung into action, calling on their network of creatives and brands to organize a one-of-a-kind party turned fundraiser for the beloved plant shop. The Plant Chica needed a new home.

The Solution

The Plant Chica had a rich history of collaboration with small businesses for events. Recognizing their importance, Red Eye enlisted these allies to create an inclusive community event.

Four generous DJs and a talented spoken-word poet donated their time through entertainment and performances that alluded to the significance of spaces like The Plant Chica in South LA. Wholly Mother Vegan and Dear Mama LA provided plant-based eats for the evening, donating 10% of their earnings. Hart House contributed cookies and prizes, quickly running out due to popular demand. Aguas Locas LA served signature cocktails and 3 cases of wine that were donated from 1010 Wines. A flash tattoo artist offered plant-themed tattoos for guests, contributing 10% of her proceeds.

Another crucial part of the activation was the silent auction, featuring donations from brands like House of Aama, Gorilla Rx Wellness, Reparations Club, More Justice, and multiple visual artists. The auction raised nearly $1000 for The Plant Chica’s new greenhouse. Together, the community rallied to ensure the plant shop's continued growth.

The Impact

Over the course of the evening, More Plant Chica saw over 265 guests. 100% of ticket sales were donated back to The Plant Chica’s fundraising efforts and after all vendor donations, ticket sales, and silent auction earnings, The Plant Chica was able to raise over $5000 over the course of four hours at More Plant Chica.
